Sabre spellings hails from the Old World (British English) and remains the European spelling. Early field manuals and writings from the 19th century in the U.S. also used the “Army Sabre” spelling. By the turn of the 20th century, U.S. manuals began to use the spelling of “saber”.

Sabre meaning and word origin
Sabre is usually curved sword (not always) of Turko Mongol origin. Sabre was adopted by Poles and Hungarians in 15th century and later by western countries.
The English word sabre derives from the French sabre which is akin to the Hungarian szablya, Polish szabla, and Russian сабля (sablya). Owing to contamination with Hungarian verb szab, which means “to cut” (cognate with the English “stab”), the term is believed to originate from the Kipchak Turkic selebe.

Cuirassiers evolved from medieval knights in 15-16th century. Cuirassiers sucessfully fought in 30 years war and in Napoleonic wars. Cuirassiers were disbanded after WW1.

Cuirassiers were heavy cavalry—”big men on big horses”. Cuirassiers were effective in penetrating lines of enemies like a storm. For example in Austrian empire they were recruited from Czechs, Moravians ands Austrians (men taller then other nationalities).

Early cuirassiers worn three-quarters armour covering entire upper body. The armor was reduced to breastplate and helmet later, during Napoleonic wars.
Armor was uneffective against rifles but it stopped bullets from short distance pistols, it was effective against stabs and slashes by rapiers, sabres and lances.
Horse armour was not used.
